Maurene Comey Firing Adds to Epstein Conspiracy Questions
The DOJ attorney and daughter of embattled former FBI director worked on Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell cases.
Maurene Comey, counsel in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and daughter of former FBI director James Comey, was fired today by the U.S. Department of Justice, according to multiple news outlets.
The termination comes as the Trump Administration continues to be hounded with questions from the public and actions by Congress following the July 7 release of a memo by the Justice Department regarding files on Jeffrey Epstein. Comey had worked on his case, as well as the related case against Ghislaine Maxwell. Her position within the storied Southern District of New York, where her father had also worked, meant that Comey worked on high-profile cases, most recently the trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Comey’s firing adds to the questions of conspiracies around Epstein. Is she being blamed for the memo? Is there some unknown impact of the Epstein case concerning her? What does she know about Epstein and an alleged client list? Is the Trump Administration firing her now — conservative activist Laura Loomer had called for her firing months ago — to distract from the Epstein media coverage and pressure?
Will she speak out on the Epstein case? Will Congress invite her to testify at a hearing? As the daughter of a well-connected, establishment figure, did she contribute to some cover-up of Epstein’s work, illegal activities, and connections?
Aside from the Epstein connection and situation, the firing could simply be because she is the daughter of James Comey, who himself had been fired by Trump, vocal with his disdain of the president, and possibly under investigation to some degree by the administration following an Instragram post perceived as threatening to Trump. It would not be surprising for Trump to hold a petty grudge like this, to take out his frustrations with James Comey on his daughter. The younger Comey would check a lot of boxes for termination. However, Trump and his team could have taken this action long ago.
Or her firing could have been part of the widespread dismissals taking place across the entire federal government. Though her termination seems to be getting individual attention, even despite her well-known name. News stories have not mentioned additional firings at this time at the Justice Department.
Whatever the reasons, Comey’s firing adds to the questions surrounding Epstein and the Trump Administration’s actions on his files. It will be worth tracking what more comes out on this, and if and when Comey speaks publicly about it all.
